Covid-19 : Complete lockdown in Chennai, Madurai and Coimbatore for four days

The Tamil Nadu government today announced a complete lockdown for four days in the corporation limits of Chennai, Coimbatore and Madurai. The lockdown will kick in from 6AM on April 26 and will go on till 9PM on April 29.

In a press release, the state government said, Salem and Tiruppur city corporation limits will also go into a complete lockdown for three days between April 26-28. 

Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami said the decision was taken after reviewing the situation and noticing the possibility of the Covid-19 spread being severe in urban areas of the state.

Even local shops that were permitted so far will be barred during this period in these urban areas. However, Koyambedu and similar wholesale markets will be allowed to operate with adequate precautions.

Sale of vegetables and fruits in mobile push carts will be allowed. Hotels, which undertake home delivery over phones, are allowed to operate.

However, hospitals, laboratories, pharmacies, ambulance and mortuary van services will continue to operate as usual during the lockdown.

Permission will be given to those working at elderly care and home for mentally-challanged.

Only government departments engaged in essential services like the Secretariat, health and family welfare, police force, Revenue, National Disaster department, Electricity, Aavin, municipal administration and water supply department will function with limited staff.

Even central government offices and banks will function only with 33% staff strength. Amma canteens and ATMs will function normally. 

Employees of IT companies can work from home and all other private companies will continue to remain shut, the order said.
