Superstar Rajinikanth on Sunday said the ruling All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagham (AIADMK) government should forget about coming back to power if it reopens TASMAC liquor shops at this juncture.
“If the government re-opens TASMAC at this time, it should forget its dream of coming back to power. Please find a better way to fill the government coffer,” the actor tweeted.
Rajinikanth’ tweet comes in the wake of the state government’s decision to approach the Supreme Court challenging an order for closure of the state-run liquor outlets passed by the Madras High Court.
On Friday, the high court had passed the order on the ground that there was a total violation of guidelines meant to contain the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Madras High Court’s order noted that there were huge crowds and no social distancing was being maintained by tipplers. However, the court allowed doorstep delivery of booze through online ordering.
Last week, actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan also lashed out at the Tamil Nadu government tweeting, “The government which couldn’t save the Koyembedu market, which was responsible for increasing corona numbers will now open the TASMAC liquor shops.”
“Does the leadership even understand that every wrong step will take their lives?” ,he asked.
Haasan was referring to the spike in the number of new cases emerging from the Koyambedu wholesale vegetable and fruit market, which has become a hotbed of Covid-19 in Chennai.
Meanwhile, the positive number of cases in the state crossed 6,000 on Saturday. The state reported 526 fresh cases on Saturday taking the total number to 6,535, out of which Chennai alone accounted for 3,390 cases.
