Google to close Neighbourly app

Google has decided to shut down its Neighbourly app, as it failed to attract more users even after two years of its launch. The voice-based Q&A social app, was designed to provide local communities an outlet to interact and exchange information concerning their daily lives.

Neighbourly was launched in 2018 in Mumbai by the search engine giant, which was later expanded to other cities.

TechCrunch reported that, Google, in an email response said, Neighbourly helped users find answers to over a million questions, but it did not get the traction the company was hoping for. The app will shut down on May 12, but users have another six months to download their data.

According to Google Play Store, Neighbourly app has more than 10 million downloads accross the world. However, the number of downloads in India is unavailable.

The app was launched as part of Google’s Next Billion Users initiative, which was focused on making products specifically for the emerging markets.
