Prime minister Narendra Modi will address the nation at 8 PM on Tuesday, PMO tweeted.
The announcement comes after Modi’s fifth interaction with state chief ministers on Monday via video- conference.
While several chief ministers requested the prime minister to extend the lockdown, many of them have also asked for financial assistance from the centre to tide over the economic crises arising out of the pandemic.
For instance West Bengal Chief mInister Mamata Banerjee demanded that the lockdown should be extended. However, she also demanded that there should not be any politics with the states while handling the crisis.
Tamilnadu and Telangana governments have opposed the resumption of passenger trains and air services in their states till May 31.
As the number of Covid-19 cases started to rise, Modi announced a 21-day nationwide lockdown with effect from March 25. The lockdown was later extended till May 3.
With a spike in the number of positive cases , the government extended the lockdown till May 17.
