Seven films confirmed for straight-to-OTT release on Amazon Prime

In a major treat to movie buffs, streaming giant, Amazon India announced on Friday confirmed release of seven new movies including Jyothika’s ‘Ponmagal Vandhal’ to Keerthy Suresh’s much-awaited ‘Penguin’ in its platform.

All the seven films will release over the course of next three months bypassing traditional theatrical release. 

Due to the ongoing Covid-19 lockdown and multiplexes remaining shut, the online streaming platforms like Amazon Prime Video and Netflix are going out to woo the producers to launch their movies in the OTT platform.

After confirming the premiere of Amitabh Bachchan and Ayushmann Khurrana starrer ‘Gulabo Sitabo’ on May 14, the OTT platform today announced six more direct-to-home menu features spread over five Indian languages. 

Here’s the list of the seven films which will premiere in Amazon OTT platform in the next three months are: 

1. ‘Ponmagal Vandhal’ a Tamil legal drama starring Jyotika directed by JJ Fredrick and produced by actor Suriya’s (Jyothika’s husband) 2D Entertainment. It was the first to announce its flight to an OTT platform, creating a tide between producers and distributors in the industry.  The movie will be released on May 29. 

2. ‘Gulabo Sitabo’ is a Hindi family drama starring Amitabh Bachchan and Ayushmann Khurrana, directed by Shoojit Sircar and produced by  Ronnie Lahiri and Sheel Kumar, a Rising Sun Films production. The movie is set to release on June 12.

3. ‘Penguin’ is an interesting emotional thriller movie in Tamil and Telugu starring national award winning actress Keerthy Suresh in the lead role, directed by Eshvar Karthic and produced by Jigarthanda and Petta director Karthik Subbaraj. The movie is set to release on June 19.

4. ‘Law’ a Kannada movie starring Ragini Chandran, Siri Prahlad and veteran Mukhyamantri Chandru, directed by Raghu Samarth and produced by Aswini Puneeth Rajkumar is set to release on June 26.

5. The dish is best eaten hot, ‘French Biryani’ Kannada comic movie starring Danish Sait, is another film produced by Ashwini Puneeth Rajkumar and directed by Pannaga Bharana is set to release on July 24.

6. ‘Shakuntala Devi’ a hindi release starring Vidya Balan, is playing the famed writer and mathematician who was popularly known as human computer, directed by Anu Menon and produced by Vikam Malhotra’s Abudantia Entertainment and Sony Pictures Networks yet to decide the premiere date in Amazon OTT platform.

7. ‘Sufiyum Sujatayum’ a romantic Malayalam drama starring Aditi Rao Hydari and Jayasurya directed by Naranipuzha Shanavas and Vijay Babu and produced by A Friday Film Production house is yet to decide their date of release in Amazon OTT platform.
